Cathedral : The “Painted Porch”
A masterpiece of gothic architecture and sculpture. The "Painted Portal" is marked by its originality of design and the iconography and polychromy, which is unique in Europe.
Built around 1220, the South doorway, known as "Painted Portal" was originally the main entrance to the Cathedral and welcomed pilgrims who came to pray to Mary, Mother of God.
The fine detail and the quality of the sculpture are a perfect illustration of the gothic theology and its beauty. The statues, sculptured in sandstone, were originally painted in bright colours. The grey plaster covering ordered by the Reformists protected these colours until today.
During the latter part of the 20th century, 35 years of wonderful restoration took place and on three sides windows have been placed to protect the statues.
