Cathedral : The “Rose” window
The rose window of the Cathedral is unique by its geometric composition, which distinguishes it from other radiant rose windows.
It is based on a mystical geometric arrangement of circles and squares. A 13th century architect, Villard de Honnecourt passed through Lausanne and made a drawing of the window in his famous sketchbook.
Of the 105 original 13th century original stained glass panes, 27 were restored at the end of the 19th century. It shows three themes popular in the Middle Ages, which are the months and seasons, the zodiac signs, the elements and the winds.
The principal theme "imago mundi" (a representation of the world) has rarely been as well developed as here in Lausanne and is unique by the absence of religious teaching.
